SoFi Stadium Will Host Super Bowl LVI Today—The Gorgeous Design of SoFi Stadium Architecture

It is Superbowl Sunday. Today’s Super Bowl LVI  will be hosted in SoFi Stadium,Inglewood, California, the new home of the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers as well as the annual LA Bowl in college football. The facility is a component of Hollywood Park, a master planned neighborhood in development on the site of the former racetrack. Hollywood Park Casino re-opened in a new building on the property in October 2016, becoming the development’s first establishment to open. SoFi Stadium was designed to be one of the finest stadiums in the United States and was meant to be a major draw.

According to Wikipedia, SoFi Stadium was designed by HKS and consists of the stadium itself, a pedestrian plaza, and a performance venue. Above the stadium is an independently supported translucent canopy which covers the stadium proper, the adjacent pedestrian plaza, and the attached performance venue. The million-square-foot canopy is made up of 302 ETFE panels, 46 of which can be opened to provide ventilation, supported by a cable net. The canopy has 27,000 embedded LED pucks, which can project images and video that can also be seen from airplanes flying into Los Angeles International Airport. The attached music and theatre venue, known as the YouTube Theater, has a capacity of 6,000 seats. The stadium and performance center are considered to be separate facilities under one roof.

Here are some most interesting facts about SoFi Stadium:

Cost of Building SoFi Stadium

According to the Los Angeles Times, SoFi Stadium cost more than $5 billion to build. It was all privately funded by Rams owner Stan Kroenke.

As would be expected with the massive undertaking that went into SoFi Stadium, it took a while for it to be made. Ground was broken on the stadium in November 2016 and it took nearly a full four years — up until September 2020 — before it was open for business.

An Indoor Outdoor Stadium

“Being outdoors in California is one of the most important aspects of living there, so we created a true indoor-outdoor stadium. There’s no [surrounding] wall—the roof is anchored at four different spots on the project, so fans can feel the Pacific breeze while inside the stadium. There’s a clear ETFE roof overhead, composed of about 300 panels, with 24 of them operable, so you can get that open and closed feeling. When it rains, you can be protected and still enjoy the game. You get the feeling of being outdoors while still enjoying a football game under a canopy roof.” — Anice Stephens, Dallas-based architect and HKS principal.

One of the striking components of the stadium’s design is the Infinity Screen by Samsung, an ovular, double-sided 4KHDRvideo board, the first of its kind, that is suspended from the roof over the field. The massive videoboard is 70,000 square feet and 120 yards long.Formerly known as “the Oculus” before a name change, the structure weighs 2.2 million pounds (1,000 t) and displays 80 million pixels. The Infinity Screen also houses the stadium’s 260-speaker audio system, as well as 56 5Gwireless antennas.

Gorgeous Stairs and Escalators

“There are some gorgeous stairs and escalators along the project so that, as you’re traveling up or down, you get a view of the ocean and the mountains. You can see for miles, and it’s an amazing view, to be so high up.” —Anice Stephens, Dallas-based architect and HKS principal.

“And then the actual roof itself with the perforated metal panels and the ETFE [is] lit up from the inside as well, so it just gives you this really beautiful aura as you’re traveling about. Even when you fly over the stadium, the lights!” —Anice Stephens, Dallas-based architect and HKS principal.

Beautiful Site Landscape

SoFi Stadium architecture and landscaping

“It’s such a beautiful site. I love the landscaping that Studio-MLA did. I’ve been out there for close to three years building this, and once the plant life was finally in-ground, it’s flourished. It really makes you feel you’re not even in a stadium. There’s canyons on the east and west of the stadium itself, so you always get natural light and natural breezes, and you see the landscapes surrounding you. You don’t really actually feel like you’re underground at all. That, for me, is a personal win, because digging 100 feet was kind of overwhelming— like building a garage, you know? But we haven’t [felt that way] at all. That’s a beautiful part for me.”—Anice Stephens, Dallas-based architect and HKS principal.
