Turmeric—Next Big Color Trend in 2020 Interiors

You may already see Turmeric color from runway, cars, objects, etc…  The color is kind of catch your eye now—fresh, fashionable, youthful and exciting.

Turmeric is an enlivening orange that infuses a hint of pungency into the palette (Color descriptions by The Pantone Color Institute).

I guess we may have stayed millennium pink and pastels too long and truly need something different or something to break through to.  The more I look at this color, the more I fall in love with.

Sunday Style—a Little Road trip to DTLA

Industrial style is still going pretty strong in Los Angeles–concrete, gray-white-black color palette, organic forms and casual vibes, …etc.   A lot of objects and furnishings are mainly from local artists.  So, they are very detail-oriented. This weekend, we were invited by a loft showroom opening.  Please take a tour with me.

Sunday Mood-board—Bold color and Pattern

Good morning! How’s your Sunday going so far? I woke up earlier and watered my garden first. I feel it is such a bless for me to enjoy my garden in the morning.  I love to observe how morning sun light shines through the greeneries with a little cute dew drops. It is such a romantic moment for me. What’s your Sunday mood? what color are you in mood for today?

We visited an art installation yesterday and it is about colorful rolling-hill landscape in Ireland. I’ve never been to Ireland and I guess people there must be very happy. You know that is true since we all have a good time on St. Patric’s Day. so here is my sunday color block mood-board. Enjoy!

The Colorful Urban Landscape of DTLA

DTLA has being gone through the major transformation within last several years. Every time, we are here, we always can see something new and feel something new.   So it is pretty exciting experience to explore new DTLA for food, cafe, architectures, boutique hotels, museums, etc.  And often the landscape of the mix -and- max of the new with historical buildings make the city so charming.

We were recently invited to a preview party of new property in China Town which is really close to city hall. The property is multi-purpose combining  with retails and residential. I am pretty amazed by how they use the color, patterns and mid-century furniture they choose.

The property has several buildings featured cheerful bright color blocks.

LAIMG_0977.jpg
When you enter the 4th floor lobby, you see this kitchen first. First of all, I really like the color palette they chose here–cool high-glossy navy blue on the cabinetry with warm textured brown copper tiles on the wall and floor. The white quarts countertop finishes the whole vignette look with a touch of fresh modern crispness. Second of all, I quite like how they design the shelving box around the fridge—it’s kind of not that serious but pretty stylish and thoughtful  vibe.  Yes, a good work flow, plenty of countertops and relax vibes often create a dream place to host a big social party.
LAIMG_0983.jpg
Here is a huge industrial chandelier at one of the entries. One of the cool features for this property is how they mix and match different styles of lighting fixtures which makes ceilings and vertical spaces so interesting.  Different layers of lighting design make your eyes always look up and move around and find that unique object.
LAIMG_0969
These playful pendants hanging over the large table in the lobby contrasts with the masculine chandelier by the entry we were just talking about above.
LAIMG_0974.jpg
This is another example how they mix different styles of light fixtures.

LAIMG_0981.jpg
A perfect picture frame. Now you know Pantone Live Coral really plays big this year.

LAIMG_0960
And of course, I cannot miss a  great selfie opportunity with this colorful and alive  urban landscape.

And here is one I stand outside on the roof of the building.

Colors that Make you Calmer

From fashion to automobile, yes, we see a lot of cream, almond, vanilla colors in 2019. The other day, I just unintentionly picked up a cream hat for myself . It looks so good with almost everything.

fall_winter_2018_2019_color_trends_almond_buff_camel.jpg

Those warm almond/cream colors are classical, soft and timeless. Now, the trend comes to the interiors too. These almond colors truly never go out of style and they do the wonder in the room.

1. DIMITY, FARROW & BALL
Farrow & Ball

It’s soft, elegant and warm, perfect applied on the trims and also rich enough to stand alone on the walls and ceilings.

“This paint color makes it into a lot of our residential projects. It is the perfect trim color when the walls are deep classic hues but it is also rich enough to stand alone on walls and ceilings themselves. I used Dimity in my bedroom when I moved into my Manhattan home six years ago and I’m still impressed by the softness and elegance years later.” — Anna Beeber

2.NATURAL WICKER, BENJAMIN MOORE

This is a quite special shade,  not too white, not too yellow, and it looks great with anything.  It is the color of a Marcona almond. IIt will look super elegant snd chic paired with leafy green or the glossiest chocolate brown.

3.OXFORD STONE, FARROW & BALL

ImageHandler.ashx.jpg

This classic dark taupe was inspired by the cottages found in the pretty Cotswold villages of Oxfordshire. It Brimming with warmth and an unmatchable depth, the subtle richness of Oxford Stone creates an earthy and uplifting finish from top to bottom, sweeping across woodwork and walls.

It’s perfect for an English country kitchen while still feeling current and fresh.

4.CHINA WHITE, BENJAMIN MOORE

38c788a64615970adfa4b32d912d3b05.jpg

China white is both cool and warm at the same time. The subtle creamy depth of the color is perfect to harmonize with both vintage elements and contemporary details.

5.NAVAJO WHITE, BENJAMIN MOORE

Its almondy richness makes it the perfect neutral. Sometimes, if a room does not have good natural light, a sharp white can go a bit gray. This ensures a warmness.

A Beautiful Tabletop

It’s middle of the week again. I hope you are all doing very well. I have couple of design projects going on simultaneously. I feel a little bit overwhelming and look for some inspiration to  just keep myself going.  I started to organize the photos for the events I have been to recently. I found something that really lights up my day—yes, a beautiful tabletop.  I guess color and fresh flowers always stimulate my brain to release more endorphin and make me feel happy. I hope you feel the same way too.

An Art Afternoon I

It is one of the typical SoCal Spring afternoons in March—warm, breezy and a lot of sunshines.  After Building Symposium, we think it might be a good idea to stroll around the West Hollywood neighborhood. We found this cutie gallery, M +B,  a hiding gem among greeneries.  The sign on the door says: Please Use the Side-door.

IMG_5542-1.jpg

It turns out that today is the last day for solo exhibition of Mishan Kahn’s  whimsical “Just Around the Bend”. And several workers are busy with setting up the new show.

The gallery room is all white—neat and clean, a perfect backdrop to showcase the unique artworks.

IMG_5545.2019-03-18 10_32_09.gif
It’s a wonderland for a big party.

As you can see from the above video, Mishan Kahn’s artworks are about furniture and  sculpture design.  The art objects he creates  are unusual assemblage of various of materials, usually an interplay between the handmade and the technological.

A New New York Vintage Restaurant in Vegas

Whenever I go to Vegas, I always love to schedule some time to check out the new restaurants.  Ken Fulk is one of my favorites designers based in New York and I follow his Instagram. He recently posted this awesome restaurant he designed —Sadelle’s ,  Bellagio.   It is kind of  vintage New York vibe, very chic.  I really like the color palette–pink, green, blue and gold— he used for the restaurant and decided to visit this time for my KBIS trip.

 Pleated brass wall scones—classic vibes

I think the main successes  for this restaurant project:

  1. Vintage and classic color palette;
  2. Drapes and upholstery soften the 10,000 square foot space
  3.  Intimate lighting complements soft furnishings, wood tables, brass accents, mirrored walls and coffered ceilings.

What about food–“a breakfast-centric morning, power lunch spot mid-day, and a dinner experience at night right in front of the resort’s Conservatory and Botanical Garden as the backdrop” Click here and see reviews from foodies

Coastal Maximalism

Every time when people talk about California coastal interiors, it is always kind of either white, cream or blueish color palettes with signature California lay-back vibes. But not for this one.  It is located right at Corona Del Mar , So Cal and has a perfect polished modern classical style with maximalism in mind. The home is owned by Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson, the co-founders of the California-based cosmetics brand Too Faced. Then, I guess you expect some big wows!

Interior designer Mary MacDonald create such wonderful color palettes for each room:
