How to Choose High-quality Glass Tiles for Your Projects

Glass tiles have high visual effect and often do a wander in any space by their beautiful colors and shimmers. I often used glass tiles for kitchen backsplashes, showers, wall treatment, spas and pool areas, etc…  They are just like jewels for home while adding a touch of modernity to any kind of design.  However, not all glass tiles come in same quality and their installation also more complicated than ceramic tiles or porcelain tiles. Before we talk about how to choose right glass tiles, let’s take a look at glass tile’s history.

Glass Tile History

Glass was used in mosaics as early as 2500 BC, but it took until the 3rd century BC before innovative artisans in Greece, Persia and India created glass tiles.

Whereas clay tiles are dated as early as 8000 BC, there were significant barriers to the development of glass tiles, included the high temperatures required to melt glass, and the complexities of mastering various annealing curves for glass.

In recent years, glass tiles have become popular for both field and accent tiles. This trend can be attributed to recent technological breakthroughs, as well as the tiles’ inherent properties, in particular their potential to impart intense color and reflect light, and their imperviousness to water. Types of Glass Tiles

  • Cast glass tiles are formed in a liquid state at temperatures of 1600°F or higher. Cast glass surfaces are usually wavy or slightly textured with inherent folds, bubbles, and creases. The casting process produces color throughout the piece, similarly to marble – not the natural stone product used for countertops, but the little round marbles we played with as kids!
  • Fused glass tiles are generally made from sheet glass that has been altered through heat. During the production process, multiple layers of glazes and similar materials are added in stages, which yields varying colors and patterns. Fused glass tile surfaces can be smooth, textured, uniform, or non-uniform.

  • Coated glass tiles are made from sheet glass that has been altered at lower temperatures. These tiles will have color coatings applied to the back of transparent glass, which allows the back-coated colors to transfer through clear glass.

How to choose right glass tile for your project

The above 3 types of glass tiles are formed in the different temperatures. Usually the higher of the temperatures, the more durable glass tiles are. But of course, the proper annealing is quite critical to avoid crack or breaking due to the sudden temperature change. Cast glass tiles can be used for pool, flooring and outdoor. Coated glass tiles are recommenced to be used for kitchen backsplash.

The most important thing to choose glass tile is actually to ask manufacturers’ data sheet. Here is an example of  the data sheet of what good quality glass tiles look like:

” manufactured by casting molten glass at 2500oF, mixed with mineral oxide colorants into molds. The raw materials are entirely recycled high quality glass, primarily waste and scrap glass from the automotive industry as well as recycled glass from CRT’s and glass containers from the food and pharmaceutical industries. As part of the manufacturing process all mosaics are fully annealed to enhance durability.”

Manufacturing Standard:

Our glass mosaics are made to meet or exceed the requirements of ANSI A137.2 American National

Standard Specifications for Glass Tile.

– Chemical Resistance ASTM C650-04; – No Effects Class A

– Thermal Shock Resistance ANSI A137.2-7.9; No Defects – Pass

– Breaking Strength ASTM C648; – Passes

– Water Absorption ASTM C373; – Impervious

– Crazing Resistance ASTM C424; – Passes

– Facial Dimensions/Thickness ASTM C499; – Passes

– Warpage ASTM C485-09; – Passes
– Freeze/Thaw ASTM C1026-13; – Passes– Slip Resistance DCOF Acutest; – .33 AVG.

Installation:

Installation instructions are provided with every box of glass mosaics. All tile installers should be familiar with the installation methods shown in The Tile Council of North America’s Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation.

For detailed instructions related to specific installations contact your installation materials manufacturer for their most up-to-date recommendation of an installation system.

Gradation Blends;

Custom gradation blends are offered in all sizes and layouts. Blends can include colors, finishes and textures. Dimensions of the finished installation should be provided when requesting a gradation blend.”

4 Caesarstone Collections You will fall in Love with

We were invited by Elements Room last night to view the new collections of Caesarstone. It has been a while since last time we used Casarstone since nowadays most of my clients kind of really favor natural  marble–specially Carrara marble.  And I was pretty amazed by Castaron’s new collections after last night’s viewing—they are beautiful,  look organic and natural, super durable and very low maintenance.  I specially fell in love with their concrete collection.

Caesarstone , quartz surface combining  nature and technology, is nonporous, scratch resistant and highly resistant to stains. Here are several my favorite ones from last night.

  1. Cloudburst concrete.

5 Ways to Create Formal Casual Home Style

TUESDAYHALLWAY.jpg

#TuesdayTransformation again!   Here are 5 steps we did to make this entry look traditionally formal yet chic, modern and relaxing:

  1. Keep all of the original panelings and paint them in glossy black to unify with the black checkered floor.
  2. Choose modern classic furnishings—traditional furnishings with clean lines.
  3. Use jewel-tones on the chandelier and objects to brighten the space.
  4. Have the striped-pattern wall scones to echo with the checkered floor.  The geometric patterns make the space very cool and modern.
  5. Fresh flowers make the space alive.

Visiting Clifton Cafeteria

The newly renovated legendary Clifton Cafeteria was just reopened on Oct. 1st in Downtown, Los Angeles.

Entrepreneur (and Conservancy board member) Andrew Meieran spent four years and millions of dollars to restore and reimagine Clifton’s for a new generation.

He updated the building’s infrastructure and restored historic features, keeping the unique redwood forest-themed interior intact.

We were able to visit this fabulous place last Saturday.  The atmosphere is relaxing, family-friendly.  It looks like a fancy social club.  Here are some photos I love to share:

5 Ways to Decorate an Entry Hallway

Entry Hallway by KHK Design
Entry Hallway by KHK Design

It’s a fresh week again.  A grand entry at your home means a good Fengshui and a great start.  We all agree that the hallway definitely makes the first impression and sends the message about who you are.  Today, I am going to share 5 ways to decorate an entry by sharing this new hallway make-over project we just did.

  1. An elegant furniture set makes the focal point and defines the sophistication of the space. For this traditional house, we use more modern  yet still-classy furniture to contrast the old style and bring freshness into the space.
  2. A right color palette make guests feel pleasant and welcome. The ivory, coral, pink and black color palette in this foyer creates formal yet relaxing and soft atmosphere.
  3. A  runner pulls guests eyes down to the floor and draws guests to the house.  The bird-pattened  runner here adds more visual interest.
  4. A chandelier over the display table in the foyer talks to the whimsical runner and is the must for the estate like this.
  5. Pink rose arrangement on the table means Welcome.

I hope you enjoy the above tips.

All the Best

Kristi

Tuesday Transformation

It’s Tuesday transformation case study again.  Here is the project we did 2 years ago—the notch area.  This recessed area is just opposite the powder room.  There is not that much day light.  The purpose after transformation is to impress the guests once they exit the powder room.  Here are 4 steps we took to make it very stylish.

Before
Before
  1. Tile the whole recessed wall with light-yellow floral tiles to create an artsy and playful backdrop.

duringprocess  2.Install gilded gold-leaf mirror to light up the space and add a touch of elegancy.

3.Have a modernized regency console sit against the wall. The same style bench completes the look.

4.A yellow Murano glass bowel with red roses  serves as jewelries in this notch area.

Suddenly, the whole area transformed to a well-dressed lady.
